ABOUT FESTIVAL SHAKESPEARE DU QUERCY

Festival Shakespeare du Quercy is an annual celebration of the works of William Shakespeare, taking place each August in stunning open-air locations in and around the Lot Valley, southwest France.

It started over a glass of wine in London in 2001, with the decision to bring a small production of Hamlet on tour, in order to present Shakespeare as it was surely intended to be played - on the cobblestones of village squares, beneath pigeonniers and wooden halles, and against a background of tolling church bells, braying donkeys and the clatter of cutlery.

Ten years on, our Festival Shakespeare enjoys contributing to the local 'animation estivale', and greatly appreciates the warm welcome and generosity of our French hosts. As night falls, so too do international barriers, as French and English, tourists and locals, are captivated by words as old and beautiful as the golden Quercy stones against which they resound.

Southwest France is home to many gastronomic treats, but we like to think we bring a taste of what literary England has to offer to "this best garden of the world, our fertile France".
